António Campos, the most ridiculous of the Haneke imitators, in his most ridiculous film. This really tries to "say" something, and it really, really tries to shock. The result is an absolutely laughable, coward, moralistic, constrained piece of self-aggrandizing cinema.
Brady Corbet's portrayal of the unreliable narrator is its best aspect, adding dimension to his sociopathic character. The film is simply a study of compulsion (sexual, lying, criminal, and money.) The bleak climax shows what we should've known all along: this guy is never truthful and blames others for his problems. Simon Killer isn't as emotive as it could be-- akin to its cold character-- but is quite fascinating.
What's the fucking point? I absolutely love 'Afterschool,' but this movie left me cold every scene. At the tail end, I realized we rarely see films about abusers from the perspective of the abuser -- but maybe this is why... It's boring! I think it tries to be a send up, but in the end it's the simpering little weenie movie for simpering little baby boys that it wishes it wasn't. GOOD MUSIC THO~~
Simon Killer further propels director Antonio Campos into auteur territory; continuing his explorations of the invasive diegetic camera, the problematic fantasy inherent to pornography, male sociopathic behavior, and the struggle to "fit in" outside of the "home". And damn, is it bleak.
