Another political diatribe from the radical Bellochio. With the charismatic Volonté as the motor behind the machinations between the press, the government, the corporate world and the disillusioned members of the subaltern Left, this film reveals the dirty laundry of media barons. Along with media stigmatization tactics, Bellochio exposes also romantic bourgeois ideology as naively adventurous. Essential viewing.
The social and political situation in the Italy of the 70's was a true bargain for Italian directors then. Here, journalism meets mass manipulation and politics when a teenager is killed in a Milanese garbage dump. Gian Maria Volontè is not a bad guy, he's simply telling us the truth as it is and shows us how to use it in order to serve his employer's interests. 'We also take part in the class-war'. 4 *.
An acid portrait of journalism as the refuge of opportunistic swine. Volonte scoffs at a naive young reporter's insistence on "objectivity," ridicules his right-wing papers' readers, manipulates and despises everyone, and approvingly quotes Goebbels's theory of propaganda. Right and left alike get damned in this portrait of Italy 1972 as a fetid canal upon which refuse lazily drifts.
