I watched this at a theatre in the most decaying area of Sao Paulo. I remember leaving the cinema after witnessing 90 minutes of Kohler trying to prove he is very socially aware & has very serious doubts about imperialism and so on and so forth, and seeing the absolute extravagance of poverty in my native country. And I remember thinking: this is such a mild, stupid, fake & imperialistic film.
Change, change and metamorphosis. This ones an artful, gentle study of the ex-pat/ aid-worker experience in Africa and life as the outsider. Variety labelled it too politically correct but I found it far more interesting and less vulgar in it's approach than the recent 'White Material'. The performances are all nice and naturalistic and the camera work subtle and unobtrusive. 3.5 stars
