A too late satire of seventies' style sci-fi television (Space 1999, Starlost) that seems earnest enough but in the end just isn't funny. Based on a stage play which must have been fringe level theatre and brought to life with purposeful lame effects. Performances are of a soap opera variety again adding to the film's conceit. It just doesn't work.
SS76 really works for me as a love letter to late 70's sci-fi and as a very dry, domestic ensemble comedy, highlighted by the brilliantly hilarious Patrick Wilson as the station's repressed, alcoholic, chain-smoking Captain Glenn. Stylishly shot with a great soundtrack, SS76 is the perfect comedown from the madness of this summer. A somber, yet entertaining space soap opera with as much heart as it has contempt.
