The scope of this is impressive. But it's also the Cleopatra of the musical: some sensational sets and perfect scenes but the whole thing lacks soul and is way too long! The narration is fragmented, to say the least. A suitable case for studying the end of classical Hollywood.
An unfairly ignored elephant of a film which provides a decent enough survey of Lawrence's life and career. It's a tad lumpy when taken as a whole but it's crafted with considerable skill and largely balances the lavish set pieces with the more intimate moments. Andrews, in strident no-nonsense mode, carries off the multiple demands of the role with flair.
