Attempting to spin too many plates results in distraction and lack of focus. Is it social issue-based? An interrogatory? Something about marital ambiguity? The fragility of life? Too many undeveloped strands with the parallel stories serving only to reference each other with heavy metaphor. The lengthy flashback provides as much necessary information as we knew in the first five minutes. Finely played nevertheless.
The story itself is very strong. One feels a lot for the two main characters. I felt that however, it did not explore the story completely. At times the delving is rather shallow. That said most of the performances are good. Swinton, as always is perfect.
