There is something very inherently "cool" about Chris Colfer, even though he plays an outcast both in this film and on Glee. However, more is at stake here, as he has presented both a script and an acting performance that are completely original and told through a lens that could only be seen by somebody with a natural wit and understanding of life, friends, the inevitability of death, and so on. Chris Colfer writes and stars in this completely winning high school comedy about an ambitious student whose unpopularity amongst his shallow peers in a dead end town leads him blackmail the entire school in order to start a literary magazine so he can get into the school of his dreams. Colfer's clever and consistently funny script is reminiscent of MEAN GIRLS, but the film packs a surprising emotional punch.
