Kagawa Kyoko has a scene at start of film, complaining to Hara Setsuko about the awfulness of her 3 day-old married life - then is never seen again. Hara's been married for years and they can barely stand each other. Hubby's urban malady is giving him ulcers, things are taking a downward turn at work. This is the basis of Naruse's "comedy." For me Hara is at her most appealing when she's quietly embittered.
