A ghoulish little Pre-Code gem rich in B-movie vitamins. It's a tale of science vs. fake spirits vs. real spirits, and it's campy enough to allow laughter while also being directed with a sense of visual style, picking up a few techniques from the silent era. But the star attraction is the rare sighting of Evil Carole Lombard, who by Act 3 is a possessed rapacious witch with Morticia Addams makeup. A joy.
Outrageously melodramatic opening credits set the stage for a fun, though flawed, tale of spiritual possession and occult charlatanism. If you're tolerant of some heavy-handed storytelling and a bit of spiritualistic nonsense, there's plenty of fun to be had in this film.
