  2. eric gould's rating of the film Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam

Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam reveals two intersecting narratives about spirtual awakening. Michael Muhammad Knight, a Pentecostal preacher's son, converts to Islam at 15 in New York. After meeting his father, a self-identified white supremacist, Knight moves to Islamabad, Pakistan, for immersive Islamic study. His conversion inspires him to write The Taqwacores a book that attracts Muslim youth to punk culture.

  3. Th MZA's rating of the film Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam

Half a star for when the white guy slaps his own chest until it’s v. red, in order to fit in w/ his brown brethren. Another half a star for the fact that “Taqwacore” started out fictional and then became a thing that people did for real. Otherwise, this piece-of-shit movie is something only a guilty white man could pretend to like.

  4. Paul Narvaez's rating of the film Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam

I'm not exactly oblivious when it comes to music subcultures...but I was certainly oblivious of this one. That's what documentaries often can do best...illuminating darkness so you see things that you never realized were there all along.
