With some great parody of US attitudes to terrorism, the Middle-East and the world beyond its borders, as well as the bravado of Hollywood blockbusters and the vapid sentiment of popular animation, this should have been a winner. But the satirical edge increasingly gets lost in the mess of expletives and toilet humour. I guess in the end the makers played safe and went for the cheap laughs and the big buck. Pity.
Despite the crude satire, Parker & Stone fundamentally make a stand in favour of belligerent American foreign policy- if not backing its extreme methods, indeed its spirit- which matches with the rudimental humour (puke, fags, cocks, pussies & the lot) both have typically advocated. Indeed Team America is a farce about stereotypes set in the American psyche, but it is also a farce about Parker & Stone themselves.
Impressive visual style, great camerawork and elaborate cinematography combined with intended lo-fi animation style. The beginning is actually very promising, I enjoyed the humour, unfortunately as the story progresses it's charm wears off and it's a constant decline into stupidity and silliness... What could have been a clever and cunning satire ended up silly and mediocre.
Far more intelligent and insightful than it initially seems, Parker and Stone's film also revels in ridiculous humour. Along with 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy', they created one of the most quotable films of that generation whose impact is still socially and culturally relevant today. The final implication that a world police is necessary, seems troubling, but I'm sure they wouldn't have it any other way.
An incredibly clever film hidden by sheer stupidity. Parker/Stone absolute nail everything in their sites with a satirical mauling; American foreign policy, Hollywood activism, Terrorist stereotyping and the whole illusion of cinema. Beyond political concerns the film is just hilarious from start to finish. The monologue about dicks, pussies and assholes might be one of the best pieces of writing ever seen on film.
"if you don’t let us fuck this arsehole, we are gonna have our dicks and our pussys all covered in shit” The best at what they do. Trey Parker, Matt Stone and a team of brilliant. George Drakoulias original music Norman Tempia puppet designer - they are all just the best.
