An almost Confucian look at the developing Hong Kong teenage identity (that would eventually lead to the generation responsible for the HK New Wave) and pulls off some surprisingly layered characters. Reminds me of the sun tribe films from the Japanese New Wave.
An extremely underrated film that uses elements of exploitation films and twists it into a very moving socially conscious film (he also does a great job at shifting tones in the film). Lung Kong (they misspelled his name here) is the precursor to Patrick Tam who in turn is the precursor to Wong Kar-wai. In other words, Lung Kong essentially started the Hong Kong New Wave before HK cinema was even well developed.
