That old Japanese standard, the love-that-cannot-be. Undistinguished, but Hara Setsuko keeps it watchable. After much mediocrity and melodramatic contrivance - the tubercular wife drags herself home on the very same night her husband finally embraces Hara's collegiate nanny and tells her he loves her, gotcha! - the film rallies to a particularly strong finish. Which makes one a lot more forgiving of earlier faults.
