3.8 A great set up for something that could have been amazing. It looks great and feels like a strange Japanese New Wave / Classic Hollywood hybrid but sadly it doesn't quite follow through on the initial promise of a feminist revenge movie. I'd still recommend a viewing as it's beautifully shot (Ichikawa's framing is fit to burst) and also pleasingly twisted and hilariously oddball in places.
3.6 Anna Biller cites this noir-ish Japanese New Wave feminist revenge melodrama as an important influence, and it's easy to see why. It has wacky scornful intrigue that is driven by female characters, and like Biller's films, the whole thing though far from being perfect, marches to the beat of a different drummer, making it unique and memorable.
