The action choreography is as good as you would expect from a Chang Cheh film. Actually, no; it's better. The film has some of the most inventive sequences I've seen in a martial arts movie. However, the plot is exhausting and becomes a chore to follow, not helped with its large cast. Just tune out the narrative and enjoy the incredible fight scenes.
One of Chang Cheh's movies that suffers from too many characters and too much plot. Cheh liked to adapt giant Chinese epics to film with varying results and this is one that isn't so successful. It has a gripping opening, and a fun finale, but everything in the middle is mostly boring.
