Our take

Based on Vera Brittain’s classic memoir, James Kent’s heartfelt drama piercingly articulates the agony of war on both a collective and a personal scale. Alicia Vikander is extraordinarily moving as a young woman courageously facing the horrors of bloodshed and the gendered prejudices of her time.
