The 39 Steps is a masterpiece & seems to be a blueprint for the modern thriller. About a man who is wrongly accused of murder & is swept into an espionage conspiracy (low-key about Nazis infiltrating British government), Hitchcock's film is so influential that one can see how it created an entire genre & shaped the rest of his career.
The ultimate film which introduced (to my knowledge) a couple that "loved-hated each other and were trapped together with handcuffs like in matrimony". All the classic Hitchcock elements are here in what is one of Hitchcock's best British productions. It is a fast-moving"wrong man on the run" film with great villains and a satisfying "MacGuffin". Fantastic film that never overstays it's welcome.
THE 39 STEPS one of the best movie from director Alfred Hitchcock (along with THE LADY VANISHES) before he moved to Hollywood. THE 39 STEPS is thrilling, suspensful, and full of twists & turns. At first, this movie has a serious theme. Then I was kinda surprised when this movie (slightly) become a some sort of screwball comedy. But don't worry, THE 39 STEPS still can keep its suspense and focus on its storytelling...
While perhaps not as finely polished as some of his later masterworks, this film is still a great early example of Hitchcock's brilliance. It features his trademark mixture of quality suspense and wit, sprinkling elements of screwball comedy over a densely-layered mystery story. Topped off with some clever uses of the camera, it's easy to see why it's considered one of the best of Hitchcock's British period.
As Hitchcock fans we were extremely disappointed in this film. We watched it hoping to see flashes of early Hitchcock brilliance, but found very little to recommend it. A few good humorous moments and some good character acting, but not a gem, not awesome, not classic, not delightful, and not something 'not to be missed'! We confess that it is a little sobering to read so many highly positive reviews on Mubi.
