You know this would be a perfect litmus test to judge if you have a good comedy on your hands. What separates this from anything other comedy I've seen recently is the attention to detail Apatow (and the cast) puts into the characters. Nothing's one-dimensional here. It's sophomoric, sure; but it brings layers to the story.
The most widely available edition of "Virgin" is the Unrated cut, which extends its length to 133 minutes - a staggering runtime for a comedy about a middle-aged man trying to have sex for the first time. As scene after scene of spliced together improv bits adds up, a kind of narrative inertia sets in, and one understands that Judd Apatow's worst enemy as a filmmaker and storyteller might just be Judd Apatow.
