French diplomat Dominique Auphal is put under surveillance by an unnamed secret service. They wish to find a weakness in his life in order to control him politically. Auphal becomes “File no. 51”: his private life is spied, analysed and commented.

Kind of like if that scene (about making film, discovering film (in a film), THE scene) from BLOW-UP was blanketed in espionage, feature length, then broke the fourth wall so many times you had to re-identify yourself in the mirror after viewing. Immaculate technique, utterly unique. A ghost of a film. (still kind of cared less...)
