3-4. A gorgeous film drawing stories from middle eastern mythology together. I'm ambivalent about commenting on how meaningful the story actually is, in spite of my fondness for archetypal storytelling, but the characters generally seem to get by on transcendental forces: genies, good spirits, demons, etc. Regardless, it's a pretty fun ride.
An early animation gem, a truly skillful and imaginative production. The story is classic fairy tale stuff, but it’s visually mesmerising, something you watch with awe. Some of the beasts are truly nightmarish; I could swear they are just like I imagined such creatures to be when I was a child.
what an artistic statement. all my love goes to lotte reininger. incredibly imaginative and mindblowing on so many levels. the visual effects alone are more than startling keeping in mind we're talking about the mid 20ies! of course one must not expect that the role of the female breaks out from this sort of "heldensage", as adventurous reininger was in other respects.
