A cool Gothic horror movie gem about a scientist trying to capture the death spirit just before dying. It is a cool concept that I like and feel is perfectly in tune with the belief people had in that era. A beautifully shot film with the great Sir Robert Stephens in the leading role helped with a excellent British cast. One of the last classic horror movies before the genre turned too violent and graphic.
Not perfect by any means, but proof positive that an intriguing concept, solid acting, and good cinematography are the only requirements for an entertaining film. The Asphyx (which sounds like a porno title when you say it out loud) is rather talky, and it's a tad predictable despite the unique subject matter, but I found myself fascinated. It probably won't ever be one of my favorite films, though.
