Ratings & Reviews

  1. chanandre's rating of the film The Avenging Conscience: or 'Thou Shalt Not Kill'

[Cinémathèque PT - 35mm] (Live score by Filipe Raposo)

  2. Hatari's rating of the film The Avenging Conscience: or 'Thou Shalt Not Kill'

Interesting early foray into psychological drama. It has Griffith's best and worst tendencies in the same package - technical mastery combined with overblown moralising.

  3. FISCHER's rating of the film The Avenging Conscience: or 'Thou Shalt Not Kill'

  5. CarlosEsquives's rating of the film The Avenging Conscience: or 'Thou Shalt Not Kill'

  6. AKFilmFan's rating of the film The Avenging Conscience: or 'Thou Shalt Not Kill'

It starts off fine and is well-made, but eventually this film kept getting ludicrous & illogical as it goes along. italicizing a bare bones inspiration from Poe, it tries to balance his works w/ Griffith's preachy message & it fails. But the nightmarish imagery, performances, the sights of ghosts & Jesus in the same movie, & the hammy pantomime of guilt make it an interesting failure.
