Rather than being a traditional "making-of" documentary or a straightforward biography, the filmmakers use "Citizen Kane" as the framework for twin stories of reckless ambition. Hearst's attempts to suppress "Kane" only made him seem truer to the "fiction" he tried to destroy. Despite "Kane" being a cinematic masterpiece, it was Welles finally flying too close to the sun. It's a sad, but poignant, look at art.
