It's a fine film that has an ending that doesn't even fit with the rest of the film. The production design is great, the cinematography is good, and the cast does a very fine job especially Geoffrey Rush. It's just that the ending leaves a poor taste in your mouth. Regardless i still need to check out the rest of Tornatore's filmography, i just feel disappointed that i started with this one.
nice to watch in a lot of ways, but then drags on second half when you can tell what's going on, and it has nothing more to give, visually, thematically, just gets stale. also felt like so much of what could have been addressed was left to the side - the bizarreness of this lonely man prone to fits and overly trusting, the relationship w 'billy', the kernels of truth in claire's story. instead it ends w a 30min "oh."
Alternative titles for me: "The cheated cheater" or "Love hurts". This is about a man who has locked away his feelings & emotions especially for women. But at last sparkled & fatally attracted, he can't stop himself from getting deeper & deeper into his own ruin. This is not a thriller, not a heist, not a crime & not a love story. It is about the psychology of a desperate man. Mr. Rush is great & so is Mr. Tornatore.
In einer frühen Szene erklärt Oldman seinem Freund Billy, weshalb er zwar ein Kunstkenner ist, aber kein Künstler sein kann: Billy fehlt das innere Geheimnis. Worst movie ever in my life. Fucking fooling around the audience. It's not possible to end like that if it's not that the writers have been changed ever 30 minutes. A fucking scam and cheap imitation. Doesn't make any sense. Felt furious for next couple of days about dumping the 3 hours of my life
