Joy and sorrow within a countryside village in Malabar when local children begin to follow the dictates of a magician/dream-weaver/madman called Kumatty, the Bogeyman. Dancing and singing through dulcet summer days, the kids are subsumed into an Animism folk-tale with Kumatty as their major domo. But nature holds danger as well as youthful intoxication. A classic Malayalam film for all.
The most cogent part of the film is that which concocts magic without recourse to supernatural devices, i.e. first half: it summons unobtrusive everyday events which are the apparent outcome of accident, yet seem to intimately correspond to some obscure psychic necessity, as we see children hail the met by chance fake bearded peddler to be a wizard they'd been hearing of. The chanted make-believe is intoxicating!
