The soundtrack is amazing. I love Oshima, because he's not afraid. Grandfather is a proud war criminal, who can't seem to stop being evil, and spreads shame and suicide in the family. To add to the insanity, there's the surreal wedding with an invisible bride. After the wedding, Masuo becomes confused as to who or what he's supposed to hump. Nothing but misery for him.
Certainly memorable movie with unique atmosphere which can be also found in Sing a Song of Sex. Not the best Oshima (Death by Hanging), but worth time without a doubt.
A family saga apparently made of memories of ceremonies, but obviously there's more (surreal stuff) to it!
You are cordially invited to attend the death of a country, fittingly torn between baseball and skulls--lots of skulls.
At this time, I believe this to be the best film I've seen from Oshima. It begins seemingly like a drama but turns into a powerful message on the clash between pre and post war Japan.
