Solid scripting and exceptional editing elevate this 'The Hustler' influenced film beyond those limitations. Ring Lardner Jr.'s script (assisted by Terry Southern) packs some good punches assisted by strong casting save the usual smug McQueen. Best in show is the flamboyant editing style of Hal Ashby which is well showcased here. Karl Malden and Edward G. Robinson excel here as does a sultry Ann Margaret.
straight Hustler remake that is worse in nearly every way, but somehow slightly less boring...if that makes sense. still, nothing very transcendent here. rip torn tears it up as does edward g. robinson. acting pretty good all around. mcqueen the weakest link here. super strangely the blues vocalist Sweet Emma Barrett who was in Lelouch's Love is a Funny Thing is also in this one. I thought I'd never see her again!
