0. It would be hard to find a more deceptive movie from a cinematographic point of view. With an excuse of validation factors (real facts + a review of Argentina's recent history, supposedly linked), are used the most spurious effects (random blurs, a lot of meaningless music to make links, paralel editing absolutely unaesthetic, unethical - see the one between the extortion of a kidnapped and a fuck in a car!).
Guillermo Francella gives a terrifying performance as the patriarch of a family in 1980's Argentina whose profession is kidnapper with the complicity of his clan. Weak supporting turns and scripting issues keep this from being anything special despite a strong ending. There have certainly been many films that better handled the ramifications of the fall of the military junta of the 70's and its effects.
Sheds little light on politics, psychology or history, but mostly holds its own as an engaging, occasionally skin-crawling variation on the Scorsesean template of classic-rock soaked, shock-schlock family sagas.
The best thing about this movie is Francella's towering performance, as mesmerising in its own way as Pacino's Michael Corleone. But neither The Clan's stylistic trappings nor its narrative decisions come close to matching him. 2nd-rate music-montage Scorsese numbers are at odds with who the characters are. And Trapero barely scratches the surface of what makes most of the family members tick. A wasted opportunity.
El Clan offers a kind of story we've probably all seen before except this time it has its basis in reality. It is quite generic in content but stylistically it is quite interesting and the casting is quite good. Something to watch with friends.
