The sequence of events that brings DeNiro and Mann together is painfully contrived. Things become more organic, but never fully gel. Most of the bit characters were horribly written. When DeNiro does stand-up there's a strange tension. This is an ode to dirty jokes that asserts even the nastiest, most profane shit, is beautiful. Mann & Falco are great, movie would've been wise to focus on their characters more. Alas.
Similar in premise and tone to Danny Collins and about on the same level of quality despite being disproportionately more comedic, The Comedian boldly sticks to its guns and never descends into mawkish territory. Just when the romance between a very good Robert De Niro and a great Leslie Mann has the chance to traverse sentimental territory, it zigs and creates a more complex character portrait. Very fun stuff.
