maan, how i loathe historical characters being played with the streetwiseness and cool airs of the "new russians", as if the only condition for the past to be revived is to teach the actors get inspiration either from jay-z's code of attitudes or from the fighting enthusiasm of a football hooligans herd. otherwise, they are too remote from reality.
I like the visual "historical aspects" in this film, especially costumes (those Cossacks look really cool) but this film has a rhythm or script problem; it didn't bring me what I expected: an epic story. Also there are really many blunt patriotic lines and I wonder if that is in accordance to Gogol's novel. I found such moments rather ridiculous.
