I love Makhmalaf for his zeal that often translates in a rather creative and poetic manner; yet this film lacked the ingenuity of a Makhmalbaf film. A film with a lot of heart, but sadly not much else.
The sequence with the intercutting of the taming of the horses with the beating of the Afghani man and later the parallel of the son beating the father on the bicycle are both examples of cinematic language at its best.
Expecting a minimalist humanistic tale, and I was at first thrown off by the impressive stylistic cinematography. Nonetheless the film still draws you in with much to mull over upon the various characters involved. Still left me a bit uncertain.
