Synopsis

It’s May 1942 on a remote artillery base. Tired of drunken, womanizing soldiers, Sergeant Vaskov is handed an unlikely solution in the form of an all-female regiment, fresh from training. As Vaskov adjusts to them, we glimpse, through flashbacks, their civilian and domestic pasts.

Our take

A protégé of Sergei Eisenstein, director Rostotsky made many films on the subject of war—this Academy Award®-nominated feature being perhaps his most fondly remembered. A unique depiction of women soldiers in WW2, co-written with prolific author, and Rostotsky’s fellow army veteran, Boris Vasilyev.
