Our take

Beloved English director Terence Davies (The Long Day Closes, A Quiet Passion) made a triumphant return to dramatic filmmaking after a decade away with this glowing, gorgeous melodrama impeccably acted and suffused with a melancholy romanticism that reminds us of Wong Kar Wai. It was worth the wait!
