Ratings & Reviews

  1. Peter's rating of the film The Desert of the Tartars

A very powerful film, and one of my favourites by Zurlini.

  2. dionysus67's rating of the film The Desert of the Tartars

Shot in glorious color Zurlini's epic features a stellar all-male cast and delivers a stunning study of the existential distinction between friend and enemy (epitomized by the Bastiani fortress and the Iranian desert), only to transfer it within the fortress and thus to blur it, as desires and reason wane in the eternally postponed conflict. The impeccably dressed ensemble of officers decays with splendid nobility.

  3. FISCHER's rating of the film The Desert of the Tartars

Une oeuvre envoûtante, d'une sourde désespérance qui navigue entre destin, fatalité, absurde, avec une superbe interprétation des principaux acteurs... www.cinefiches.com

  4. Bonnet Michel's rating of the film The Desert of the Tartars

  5. Martin Wilson's rating of the film The Desert of the Tartars

Waiting, endlessly, in a desert fortress for an attack that never comes, from an enemy that may be, in fact, a mirage. The vast citadel ARG-E BAM, in Iran, the main location for this film, was destroyed in 2003 by earthquake. It dates back 6-4 centuries BC and was located on the Silk Road, at the crossroads for important trade routes. This epic, like no other, becomes more potent with each passing year.

  6. José Neves's rating of the film The Desert of the Tartars

    Cinematography by Luciano Tovoli.
