One of the first films where the story takes place in “real time,” follows a young soldier in WWI whose train is bombed who decides to return to his native village to see his parents and his girl. aka Le déserteur.

Goes to show that outside the so-called canon there're still French masterpieces of the 30s yet to be discovered. I'm tempted to quibble with the too neat finish, but when a flick's got this much suspense and romance crammed into its 85 mins (this is one of the first films to use the "real time" trick) I can't find it in me to complain. And the cinematography! Black and white doesn't come much better than this.
