A savory blend of lust, greed, betrayal, murder, manipulation, and madness. Not quite poliziotteschi, not quite giallo; who cares?! Highly satisfying, not to mention constantly aesthetically pleasing. Make sure to get the Shameless Films release, which stitches together small clips of rather shoddy footage for what I can only assume is the most complete version of this lost gem.
It looks like a giallo, it sounds like a giallo but it's not a giallo. it's even better. Shot on location in Milan, Venice and near the Lake Garda, co-written by Aldo 'Who saw Her Die?' Lado, La Vittima Designata allows us to attend a sumptuous duel between two great actors, Pierre Clémenti and Tomas Milian. The surprise of the month. Highly recommended.
Rather muted Gallic variant on Highsmith with most of the expected genre excesses kept firmly under-par. It coasts along rather too politely to the predictable finale enlivened only with occasional flourishes of art direction and blasts of organ music; but one only wishes it was a little less buttoned-up and just disgraced itself once in a while with a dollop of sleaze. Dull.
