Ingmar Bergman tackles the hard issues as this is absolutely not a film for depressed pregnant women or parents as it includes both child murder and suicide. Great photography from Sven Nykvist make this a fantastic black and white film and I love the experimental camera style. It's frankness would never have passed the censors in Hollywood at the time.

  3. dionysus67's rating of the film The Devil's Wanton

An astonishingly mature and dense early work from Bergman that tackles with admirable skill the major themes of his later work: the absence of God, motherhoood, abortion, nihilism, men as eternal children, existential angst. A film within a film, it captures in expressionist b/w the quintessentially Bergmanesque image of Death and its shallow antidote: the cinema studio as the "temple of the ridiculous". Demonic!

I'm no hater. And coming back to IB, esp. one I haven't seen, is a treat. This is 1949 people. And his first feature with exclusive production control. It's kind of a mess, and all the better. Classic themes permeate, predominately Death, but it is the dream sequence that seals the deal, preluding scenes of HotW, WS, and S&T. Ironic Bonus: Ekman, who became overshadowed by IB, starring as a film director w/in film.

  8. FISCHER's rating of the film The Devil's Wanton

  11. CarlosEsquives's rating of the film The Devil's Wanton
