My love for Greta Gerwig continues! A Harold and Maude love story that effortlessly walks between comedy of manners and poignant naturalism. Maybe people don't actually act like this but it doesn't mean its not intensely realized and felt and works for an endearing story. These characters are so obtusely crafted that I was surprised that I cared in the end.
I'm a sucker for non-traditional "romance" films. I'm working on it, I swear.
I'm pretty sure actual human beings do not talk or behave the way the characters in this movie do; it's such phony dialogue and behavior. The film is at its best when the characters simply are not talking. There are some nice quiet moments and good cinematography, but it's not enough to save the film. If you want to see this type of movie done right watch "Lost in Translation" or "My Own Private Idaho".
