This is an extraordinary picture. Eva Green is an absolute revelation here in this love letter to the cinema, love, and revolution. Bertolucci uses music and film clips to evoke the emotions and actions of the characters and it is brilliantly done to convey the world in which these three wanted to live in but were unable to. Nobody could make complex and fucked up relationships look as good as Bertolucci could.
Estranged movie lovers reliving scenes of cinema history which they link with sexual experimentation. There’s a lot to say about the inherent connection between sexuality and staring at people doing things on screen, but I’m not sure Bertolucci manages that in his film. To me, despite many pleasant scenes and impressive images, “The Dreamers” remained obscure and self-serving.
