The first 20 minutes were so dismal I turned it off, but then I read the reviews by Duncan Gray and Zynab, so I stuck it out and as usual, by the end of the picture Stanwyck is burning up the screen. I do like Siodmak too, although this is not his best it still has a lot going for it and I am glad I saw it.
so ppl say this sucks cuz of stanwyck's boring costar...don't u see...they someone who could do a good pathetic sap...wendell corey is PERFECT...almost better than barbs honestly...but no one is better than siodmak...and george barnes' camera...watch this restored to see that luscious, luscious chiaroscuro
Solid noir premise unfortunately brought down a star by an awkwardly written romance and a boring male lead. Of course, noir saps are boring by definition, but their boring-ness can be played in fascinating ways, and characters who give in to insane human desires should feel human rather than insane. Still, stick with it for a wonderful second half, and it has some legit great scenes that hint at deeper thoughts.
