Malaparte's only film is a staggering achievement, unrelenting in the methodical steps with which it unfolds the drama of the main protagonist, beautifully incranated by Vallone. The wounds of war and Christ's "crucifixion" acquire multiple layers of interpretation, most notably in line with a Marxist utopia of the oppressed. There are chillingly moving moments and the cinematography is first class. Masterpiece!
