Jonathan Smith's rating of the film The Full Monty

A deceptively profound piece of British cinema. Ostensibly The Full Monty is an excellent comedy about stripping steel workers, but the social commentary at play is far more telling than you'd remember. The gender politics, critique of modern masculinity & indictment of Thatcherite politics are at work behind the central striptease. Accessibly social realism that remains one of this country's best exports.
