3.6 stars. Melodrama, but human, not manipulative. Sjöström was very skilled at telling women's stories sympathetically, not luridly (considering his plots similarities to those of von Trier). I watched this while listening to Chopin's nocturnes and it was quietly devastating. Lili Bech gives a fine performance. This is how husband and wife collaborations can look when the film isn't an exercise in emotional abuse.
