Helga is a young unmarried mother who breaks into the trial of the child’s father to prevent him from committing perjury. Gudmund, present at the trial, is impressed by the girl’s courage and convinces his parents to take her on as a servant girl.

Sjöström makes Lagerlöf's rather undistinguished, sentimental novella about social ostracism (unwed mother) into a rather undistinguished, sentimental film. There's nothing at all wrong with either the story or the film, but both fail to move me much.
