Naruse's most doom-laden film, and one of his very best

Or: Lesson in how to make a film that's under an hour (HIDEKO THE BUS CONDUCTRESS is also a useful exhibit). At first it seems like a fairly standard '30s Japanese comedy-drama: there's the dutiful daughter and the modern daughter, that lovable drunken rascal, grandpa, etc. But as in HIDEKO, Naruse shows that he's only been setting up the china to pull the tablecloth out from under it. All comes tumbling down.
