Ratings & Reviews

  1. Durandré's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

  2. Hammer.K's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

Superbe. En peu de mot et sur de magnifique image Herzog nous plonge une nouvelle fois dans un esprit qui se dépasse, aux limites du corps humain, un esprit qui témoigne d'une réelle et vrai humilité car conscient de exceptionnelle performance !

  3. Superfrog's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

Perfect format for a documentary about being the best and still being pushed for more. Possibly best documentary one could make for me about the subject of ski flying.

  4. Bonnet Michel's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

  5. Ludovic72's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

  8. Trapped In The Cinema's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

Something you have always needed in your life, and never realised - a Werner Herzog documentary about a 1970s ski-jumping carpenter. https://trappedinthecinemablog.wordpress.com/2016/08/18/the-great-ecstasy-of-the-woodcarver-steiner-1974-%E2%98%85%E2%98%85%E2%98%85%E2%98%85/

  9. Brotherdeacon's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

3 & a half stars. A lovely doc. Steiner and his motivations make for very interesting rumination, while the over-cranked flights with Popol Voh and its numerous camera angles to edit created a work both simple yet accomplished. Some films are best left rather small and quiet as is this one.

  10. Mighty Quinn's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

The ski jumping scenes shot in slow motion set to the music of Popol Vuh were great to watch, though I appreciate his talent as a sportsman, I didn't find Steiner that interesting of a subject.

  11. Jim Pan Z's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

Fantastic camerawork of the woodcarver flying.

  12. anarresti's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

An incredible tale of an athlete that was trying not to fly too long. Herzog did ski jumpimg, in his youth years, and he has said this documentary is very dear to his heart.

  13. Juan Leal's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

  14. CarlosEsquives's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

  15. suede's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

Deservedly counted among Herzog's best docs. Strikes a fine balance between the stylized, dreamy, awe-inspired, and the documentation of a specific event. It's not all that exceptional, however—I wonder if cinephiles are aware of how many sports docs like this exist. Werner's fawning towards Steiner, culminating in a bizarre final title card written in the first person, is a little hard to stomach. [vwd. Jun'15]

  16. Neil Bahadur's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

I don't understand this, "white-european exceptionalism, 'man must conquer nature'" bullshit. Somebody give me a hint here!

  17. Dr. Q's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

Interesting, deep, but it was too detachted to touch the viewer. Fantastic documentary for a lonely evening on the couch/in bed :)

  18. Miggy Angel's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

one of my favourite herzog docs - whilst watching it i did ponder how maybe i am the person to make 'the great ecstasy of eddie the eagle edwards' but ykno only for a moment

  19. kartina obskura's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

"i ought to be all alone in the world, just me, Steiner, and no other living thing. no sun, no culture, myself, naked on a high rock, no storm, no snow, no banks, no money, no time, no breath. then, at least, i wouldn´t be afraid."

  20. Fabio Nosotti's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

  21. Samuel T.'s rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

So seemingly simple and straightforward. And yet he, again, manages to pry deep down into the cavity that is the human soul, the raven being preyed upon by it's own kind.

  22. Benjamin Crais's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

It's interesting how involved Herzog appears here. There's always a palpable fascination with his characters, but I've never seen him so boyish.

  23. Algitya's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

  24. Damian's rating of the film The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner

As hypnotic as any of Herzog's best feature films. A Fascinating insight into the almost super human Steiner.
