I absolutely did not appreciate the modern music being used in this remake. Instead of placing me in the 1920s and getting lost in the characters and their networking's, I found myself remembering I was stuck in the 2010s. Also, certain character's styles were not captured correctly. 2 stars purely because the cinematography and set design was moderately taken into consideration.
I panned this one 3 years ago because of the critical reception. It certainly not a great film but I feel it was generally under-appreciated. It seemed like a sincere storytelling with just the right amount of Luhrmann's "maximalising". I tough the third act was especially moving and well composed. It felt earnest to me anyway.
I gotta hand it to Luhrmann. It is a disaster you cannot avert your eyes from. Though ridiculous and and very badly acted, written, directed and edited, it still had it's winning moments. The only thing that cannot be excused is how awful Tobey Maguire is nowdays (or maybe he's been this terrible forever and I've never noticed it before).
