Ratings & Reviews

  1. tintinmugshot's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

Pure entertainment. This movie stands almost as a documentary about the Ringling Brothers Circus and their past of glory. All the circus characters and their performances, in a fast and clever edition, absolutely made this movie worth every frame. And there's a B movie feel among the story that makes this timeless and necessary.

  2. P Teddy Sawyer's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

One of life's great guilty pleasures ..... The circus as an unflinching metaphor for the USAmerican ideals and way of life

  3. Charles Corn's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

Now more enjoyable as a document of the circus than as a drama. The ambition and quality of the filmmaking is clear, but it is ultimately bloated and dated.

  4. Kevin Matthews's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

This may be a bit old-fashioned for some, and it may also feature some archaic animal acts that people are happy to have nowadays phased out of most circus performances, but this also sure as hell lives up to that title. I was entertained throughout, tensed up during every major stunt sequence, and absolutely loved the feeling of spending a couple of hours at the circus. Simply superb entertainment.

  5. Jugu Abraham's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

Cornel Wilde's directorial work " No blade of grass" (1970) was good--he even wrote the lyrics of the song sung by Roger Whittaker. A better filmmaker than an actor.

  6. SamSalt's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

It's perhaps easy to see this film through modern eyes and find it wanting but I still love this film. It's important as social history too - take away the dramatic elements and consider the circus performances and you are looking at a way of life that just doesn't exist today. If you have access to Charlton Heston's autobiography "in the Arena" he devotes a big chunk to this film that makes interesting reading.

  7. Superfrog's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

I don't get why people make long films out of stories of little contents. This is delivering what it is trying to deliver but does not have the density to sustain itself, neither in photography, screenplay, or script. Disappointing.

  8. Louise_Dietrich's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

Not as bad as Cavalcade and Around the World in 80 Days, but still pretty bad. I did like James Stewart in this so there is that.

  9. Edna Sweetlove's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

  10. José Neves's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

    Cinematography by George Barnes.

  11. delphine dynamite's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

  12. Christian R.'s rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

i loved Jimmy Stewart in this!!!

  13. StellaWasaDiver's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

Betty Hutton was intolerable. The audience was just slightly better than Bergman's Magic Flute audience. Circus antics were mildly amusing.

  14. Christopher R. Smith's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

Cecil B. DeMille's ambitious big top saga is a bloated and badly-dated melodrama. It has a few compelling moments (the subplot involving Jimmy Stewart's fugitive clown adds some decent suspense), and the all-star cast provides some entertainment value. But the soap-opera theatrics and old-fashioned spectacles just don't hold up, and the whole thing is way too long.

  15. Roscoe's rating of the film The Greatest Show on Earth

    Painfully bad and vastly entertaining.
