Ratings & Reviews

  1. Slappy McGee's rating of the film The Grocer's Son

Really excels due to its wonderful performers and beautiful cinematography. Solid performances throughout the movie highlight the narrative that is not necessarily original. However, setting the story in the French countryside is wonderfully romantic and certainly quite beautiful. Plus the notion of a traveling grocer reaching out to older people in the country is pretty intriguing and something I haven't seen .

  2. Eric Rucker's rating of the film The Grocer's Son

A lovely film. Formulaic, with too many music video moments attempting to stand in for actual character development, but still, lovely. I love that side of Europe, in all of the countries, where the countryside meets the mountains and old ways are still hanging on. (Tati's Jour de fête was a manifesto!)

  3. davidscottlewis's rating of the film The Grocer's Son

I enjoyed this. Sometimes the expected really does lead to happiness, what we want when we want it doesn't work, but there's still a happy ending.

  4. David R Williams's rating of the film The Grocer's Son

A nice little film with great performances all around.

  5. Loz Loory's rating of the film The Grocer's Son

Great to see Clotilde Hesme playing a happier character than she does in the TV series "Les Revenants." Beautiful scenery and well-done family drama. Loved the gradual way Antoine manages to make a better space for himself in relation to his home. Felt a bit let down by the end. If only the older and younger generations in family businesses could untangle themselves so tidily in real life.

  6. Allison Rung's rating of the film The Grocer's Son

Trite and slow-moving but nice mise-en-scène.

  7. Christofer Aniel's rating of the film The Grocer's Son

A film with a heartwarming narrative. The music was used sparingly which added a lot of emotion to the pivotal scenes. Set in a peaceful rural area, the film thrives from the interactions between Antoine and his family, friends, and townsfolk. Starting off with a decade old family feud, the director Eric Guirado shows us how the changes in one person’s life can positively affect the people around him.

  8. Anna Keefe's rating of the film The Grocer's Son

"The Grocer's Son" is a beautiful film, both aesthetically speaking and in reference to the narrative. Madame Sforza in particular is a captivating character and her dynamic with her son gives this film a unique charm. It is a beautiful testament to the complications of family ties that anyone can relate to.

  9. Tim R.'s rating of the film The Grocer's Son

The darkness the male lead, his brother and father struggle with is as believable as their emergence from it. Excellent acting throughout, in particular the supporting roles.

  10. MATTEO BITTANTI's rating of the film The Grocer's Son

A conventional, predictable story of redemption that benefits from a charming rural setting and convincing performances from the entire cast, especially Clotilde, who makes everything seem magical, even cottage cheese.
