All good friendship come over a pint of Guinness and I love that the Irish people has the same black humor as me - at least this film has it. A great film about an unpolitical correct copper with a free spirit and mouth. Superior cast, but Brendan Gleeson is the whole film here. Only, the scenes with the mother seem unnecessary.
2,5 stars only. This is introduced as a comedy, crime, thriller; whatever you name it. Yes, it is little bit of everything. And little bit of everything means none of these. Too poor to carry an entire film long. Brendan Gleeson does his job, but can't shoulder it all. Don Cheadle, his counterpart, is performing so weak, it almost hurts to watch. Truly disappointing.
I can't tell if you're really motherfucking dumb or really motherfucking smart.
Clever & thrilling, McDonagh's debut is a character-driven cop film that isn't brought low by cliches & plot mechanics. Placing Gleeson front & center, as the grouchy, offensive, & likable cop, is a genius move as he gives a magnetic performance that may be a career-best. While the drug-trafficking element may not matter as much, even the existential villains headed by Cunningham make it work. An unexpected pleasure.
